When Lilly Ledbetter learned she was making less money than a man for doing the same job, she filed a lawsuit against her employer. She lost, when a 2007 decision by the Supreme Court ruled an individual must file a lawsuit within six months of their FIRST receiving a discriminating paycheck.

The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was signed into law by President Obama in 2014. This act allowed workers to sue for 180 days of receiving each discriminating paycheck, not just their first one.

The Valparaiso city council approved the 2025 salary ordinance on October 14, 2024. The city engages a consultant to perform a wage study every five years, to assist the city determine how much to pay employees by comparing their compensation to similar roles in other municipalities, along with market trends. The next wage study is scheduled for 2027 and I requested a gender pay equity analysis to be added to the wage study. I did not know of Ms. Ledbetter’s passing until today, and am pleased to have brought this request for a gender pay equity analysis to the city at this time.
